Lamin will be officially opening The 2016 Mobility Roadshow at Silverstone on 26th May, 10am. Since 1983, the Mobility Roadshow has been the UK’s leading disabled consumer event that showcases the latest adapted vehicles, products and services for independent driving and mobility. This remarkable event is organised by the charity Mobility Choice so that the widest choice of accessible vehicles, adapted driving controls and mobility products can be trialled and tested – being held at the iconic home of the British Grand Prix for the first time this year. Lamin rose to fame following his appearance on the DIY SOS Big Build ‘Homes for Veterans’ Special which involved the redevelopment of an entire dilapidated terraced street in Manchester to provide homes for injured servicemen and women. Lamin, a 39-year-old disabled ex-Guardsman and his family were grateful recipients of one of the new accessible homes. The two-part DIY SOS that Lamin appeared in generated significant press coverage as HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Henry of Wales visited the extensive two-week build. Following this Lamin has just finished competing in The Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida – a Paralympic-style international competition for injured servicemen and women set up by Prince Harry. Lamin competed in several events during the Games and won Bronze at shot put with an impressive distance of 7.57m and threw the discus 19.44m to secure a further bronze. Lamin comments: “Competing at the Invictus Games was simply awesome, I will never forget it. The atmosphere was electric all the way through and to win a Bronze medal was the best feeling. The Games have been such an important focus for me however I am now looking forward to opening The Mobility Roadshow. I will be able to share my Invictus experiences with visitors at the show and participate in the various accessible sports on show. When living with disability, playing adaptive sport is so important for a positive mental attitude.” Lamin adds: “I have always had a massive passion for cars and sport so the opportunity to officially open The Mobility Roadshow and drive around Silverstone is a dream come true. I am so honoured to be recognised as a VIP and to be an event Ambassador.” Lamin, originally from Gambia, moved to Britain in 2005 to join the British Army. As Gambia is a Commonwealth country, residents are allowed to join the British Armed Forces and Lamin served in the Irish Guards for five years. On New Year’s Eve 2010, he was severely injured by an exploding IED in Afghanistan resulting in the loss of both legs and one arm. Lamin survived this horrific ordeal and now continues to rebuild his life whilst looking for opportunities to motivate and inspire fellow disabled individuals. www.mobilityroadshow.co.uk At the Silverstone Mobility Roadshow, TGA Mobility, the nation's trusted mobility scooter specialist, will be demonstrating a pioneering new 'Whill' powerchair and seeking valued feedback from visitors to ascertain its suitability for the UK market (26-28th May, Silverstone Circuit, Northants, Stand H2-54).

The Mustang is a walking aid for disabled children and youngsters, who need supplementary assistance with their daily walking. The Mustang provides excellent and snug support for the upper body whilst also keeping the child’s pelvis gently supported. The upright, slightly forward leaning position stimulates the walking function and encourages the child to participate in daily activities. The Mustang can be used by e.g. CP children and others with lack of balance and impairment of their motor function. The Mustang is developed as a basic anterior walker but can also be used as a posterior gait trainer, depending on the child’s level of ability. The Mustang is available in four sizes and suitable for children and young people. Tommy lives with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex which has caused the growth of benign tumours, particularly in his brain and affects movement and abilities. Tommy has high tone in his lower legs and requires a lot of support to facilitate walking and to progress developmentally. Tommy recently started attending Humberston Park Special School, Grimsby, where Frances George, Specialist Physiotherapist, MSc, BSc, HPC, MCSP has introduced “walking and stepping” focus groups to assess the walking patterns of children with different abilities. Frances explains: “To encourage a child to walk, it is important to understand the 3 gait phases of a normal walking pattern – the heel strike, stance phase and toe off which happen reciprocally. If a child makes a heel strike with the right foot, then a stance phase will be happening on the left – creating stability and placing the hip and knee in a neutral position. A step forward into toe off extends the hip and knee before allowing the knee to flex and the leg to swing through. This is then followed by the knee extending and the foot dorsi-flexing to create a heel strike. During this process, weight is transferred from the back to the front foot which creates sway or a “lateral shift”. This entire process allows propulsion forwards and is the walking pattern we want to achieve when we place a child in a walker.” Read more...... Norma with 31-year-old disabled daughter chooses second Abacus assistive bath instead of a wetroom5/10/2016 Thanks to a next generation Abacus bath Norma Beaumont can continue to bathe her 31-year-old daughter who lives with physical and mental disabilities.
Lucy Beaumont, aged 31 is a delightful disabled adult who lives with her mother in Swanley, Kent. Lucy lives with undiagnosed physical and mental disabilities that were probably caused by a developmental brain defect before birth. Lucy is able to tentatively walk with carer support however has limited mobility and cognitive abilities, no speech and requires care 24/7. During the week Lucy attends the Gravesend Community Day Service Centre which allows her mother, Norma, to work part-time. Apart from these weekday visits Norma cares for her daughter at home which is an uncommon situation bearing in mind Lucy’s age. This is possible by ownership of only one piece of specialist equipment – a power-adjustable assistive bath from Abacus Healthcare. The variable height bath with integrated platform which Norma uses is the second Pisces she has owned. Her first Pisces provided assured performance for over 20 years. Both Pisces baths have been regarded as ‘life savers’ by Norma. Without them Norma would not have been able to bathe Lucy as manually lifting her has been impossible since she was aged 12. Before each installation Norma was recommended a wetroom by the local council however she rejected this in preference for a bath. Considering what was best for Lucy and day-to-day practicalities, Norma believes bathing is far more therapeutic and rewarding than showering on many levels. The Beaumont’s new Pisces provides many benefits over and above their previous model including quieter and smoother operation, a roaming hand controller and integrated shower. Read more.... Multiple Sclerosis (MS)An orthopaedic adjustable bed from Theraposture will assist with many symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis. MS is an unpredictable condition and the severity of its affects varies greatly, however problems associated with mobility and balance are common. People with Ataxia, muscle contractions and spasms can greatly benefit from a bed that includes profiling, variable height, or profiling and variable height adjustment.
Theraposture single and dual combination motorised beds encompass quality German-engineered mechanisms that alter the configuration of a mattress so a variety of position can be achieved. With reduced or no discomfort users can either raise their upper body or legs from a flat position and vice versa. Getting in and out of bed with MS is easier too, especially with variable height as standing up requires less effect. Whilst lying in bed, owners can be assured that comfort is maximised through the ability to achieve the perfect sleeping position – this aids extended periods of sleep, which greatly reduces fatigue commonly associated with MS. How a Theraposture double combination rotoflex bed is helping carol with multiple sclerosis5/5/2016 As Carol Parker’s Multiple Sclerosis now causes considerable challenges at bedtime, the Parkers have purchased a Theraposture Double Combination Rotoflex Bed to provide assistance and support.
“Prior to getting our Theraposture Rotoflex bed, Carol used to have a lot of pillows around her just to get comfy and then she’d be stuck in the same position,” explains Barry, her husband. “Her legs were badly swollen because the fluid wasn’t draining away and as her MS has progressively got worse, the only way Carol could get into bed or move in the night was with my help. We looked on the internet and found the Theraposture Rotoflex bed; we’d not come across anything like it, especially as it isn’t clinical and we wanted our home to still feel like a home.” They chose a Theraposture Double Combination bed with two independent mattresses surrounded by faux leather. The variable height, profiling and rotating mechanism on Carol’s side of the bed moves her from a lying to an upright seated position. Once seated with her feet comfortably positioned on the floor Carol can also raise the Rotoflex so standing up or sitting down is safer and requires less effort. Read more.....
