Tony Purchase, 87 from Bookham near Leatherhead, has been presented with his winning Minimo mobility scooter following a successful entry to TGA’s latest newsletter and Facebook competition. Before retirement Tony was a successful retail development manager at Sainsbury’s for over 40 years. He now appreciates his free time however lives alone after losing his wife last year – resulting in a greater need to remain independent for as long as possible. Tony can still drive his car safely however he anticipates in the future he will need another way of remaining mobile. He lives in a picturesque part of Surrey and regularly visits National Trust sites however walking longer distances is now not possible. Hence he decided to enter the TGA Minimo competition for a chance of winning the latest folding mobility scooter. The Minimo is a lightweight compact scooter that is designed for maximum transportability and can be stored in a car boot. Folded quickly in one simple movement the Minimo is also ideal for use on airplanes, buses, coaches, trains and boats. On receipt of his winning news Tony was ‘absolutely delighted’ and ‘couldn’t wait to get out and about.’ Tony elaborates: “Since losing my wife I am having to readjust my life, this is where my new TGA Minimo comes in. I am still driving my Honda Jazz however there will be a time when its best for me to stop and rely on my new scooter. I have already used my scooter to access the village and I intend to try and get about to see my friends more. I have a female friend who is 93 so when we go out for a walk together we will take turns on the scooter. I’m having a hoist fitted to my car so I can get the Minimo in the boot with no lifting at all as I have neck and shoulder problems. I can then take my Minimo with me on days out. As my friends are all now struggling with their mobility, it’s so important for me to be able to get out on my own to stay in touch with them. Thank you TGA for my fabulous prize.”

Barbara is a retired Accounts Manager and during Peter’s working career he was responsible for managing heavy plant machinery. Peter experienced a Stroke eight years ago and has issues with both knees – hence they both find walking extremely difficult. Covering large distances on foot is impossible. However difficult daily life can be they continue to remain positive, happy and independent through ownership of four mobility scooters – two large models with off road capabilities and two that fold and fit in the boot of their Skoda Yeti. Being able to go out independently or with their family keeps them ‘full of life’ as Barbara explains: “Owning these scooters has literally changed our lives, what would we have done without them? TGA, the leading local specialist for quality mobility scooters and independent living products, will be hosting its latest free safe driving awareness day on Thursday 27th July. 11am – 3pm. Woodhall Business Park, Sudbury, Suffolk. CO10 1WH.
This fun event will give mobility scooter users and prospective owners the opportunity to learn the latest safe driving tips around the TGA test track – with the help of friendly experts. This will be an informal and relaxed driving experience which will give scooter owners a better understanding of their own capabilities in terms of steering, reversing and negotiating day-to-day obstacles. Crossing roads in a safe manner and understanding aspects of the Highway Code will be explained so scooter users, drivers and pedestrians can all benefit from improved safety. This is not a driving test with a pass or fail score, it is simply an awareness programme that offers an informal certificate of completion at the end. Visitors can bring their own scooter for a free health check or test drive any model in TGA’s comprehensive range. The charities Parkinson’s UK, MS Society and Macmillan will be supporting the event along with the Police and Rehab United. There will be a charity cake sale and an unmissable 25% off all showroom scooters, adjustable chairs and wheelchairs. Daniel Stone, TGA Managing Director, says: “We welcome all existing and potential mobility scooter users from across East Anglia to come to our safe driving day. It will help everyone gain confidence and discover how to enjoy independence with maximum safety and peace of mind.” St John's College in Cambridge has been trialling the TGA WHILL wheelchair, an all-weather, all terrain wheelchair from the Silicon Valley, to help disabled students manoeuvre around the College’s historic buildings. https://lnkd.in/fp9XqV4 #wheelchair #AllTerrain More details: https://www.tgamobility.co.uk/range/powerchairs/whill Young Disabled Ex-Royal Navy Sailor Discovers Mobility Scooters Can Be Cool With TGA And SSAFA7/18/2017 Scott Stafford, 27 from Suffolk and disabled Royal Navy veteran, has rediscovered his zest for life thanks to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and a new off-road Vita X mobility scooter from TGA.
Scott served in the Royal Navy for five years until he unfortunately experienced a severe back injury during a training exercise. This accident led to Scott being unable to walk long distances and the need for continual pain relief – hence he was medically discharged. Now retired from the armed services, Scott continues to wait for medical clearance so he can work again and has to cope with limited mobility. Without the ability to venture outside independently Scott was getting frustrated at home and needed a solution to get outdoors. Owning a mobility scooter was never a consideration for him as Scott felt they were old fashioned and would not be suitable for a younger man. This all changed when his health visitor applied to SSAFA for funding and introduced Scott to the trendy TGA Vita range. The Vita X from TGA is unlike any other 8mph mobility scooter – it is a large, striking black model with streamlined styling, LED lights, racing bucket seat, advanced off-road suspension and high grip tyres. With many components taken from the motorcycle industry the Vita X resembles more of a quad bike than a traditional mobility vehicle. These cutting edge, rugged looks immediately appealed to Scott as he explains: “Not been able to walk is a pain, especially when you have been an active guy like me. When I saw the Vita X for the first time I was blown away, it looked nothing like a mobility scooter. I always imagined scooters to be slow and boring and really embarrassing to drive. I am so pleased my health visitor introduced me to the idea and I cannot thank SSAFA enough for finding the funding.” Read more.... Ben Wilde, aged 32, lives with his family in Marchwiel and is supported by carers due to a range of challenging disabilities. Ben’s bathtime is now safer and more enjoyable thanks to a new Gemini bath from Abacus Healthcare The Gemini, necessitated by Ben’s deteriorating health, is fully height adjustable and crucially provides an integrated variable height platform to assist with bathing, drying and changing.
Ben has severe epilepsy, osteoporosis, autism and is unable to communicate verbally. He shares the family home with his mother Dorne and his sister’s family, including his three nieces and nephews. Ben’s health began to deteriorate rapidly four years ago following a broken leg. Up until this point, Ben had managed to bathe in a standard bath with the assistance of his mother Dorne. Dorne explains: “Ben used to be able to walk and stand up in our old standard bath to be washed. Unfortunately, after he broke his leg, Ben never recovered his mobility and his health has become worse. The doctors are investigating if Ben has developed a new condition and the epileptic seizures have also damaged his brain. As a result of these changes, we found ourselves unable to cope adequately with Ben’s bathing regime which to be honest became ridiculous. We did try a seat that rose up and down in the bath which helped somewhat, but I found I was too frightened to bathe him in case he fell again. The process didn’t feel secure or safe.” Supported by Ben’s Occupational Therapist, the family applied for a Disabled Facilities Grant from Wrexham Council. This was to include improved bathing facilities as well as an extension to increase the size of Ben’s bedroom. Dorne continues: “Social Services recommended we install a wet room. However, I felt strongly that this was not suitable for several reasons. Firstly in my opinion, it was too high risk due to Ben’s daily seizures and because he can break his bones so easily. Secondly, Ben very much enjoys bathing rather than showering. He doesn’t get much enjoyment out of life so this was a really important factor. He can stay in a bath for 10 to 30 mins and be happy – I was determined that he wouldn’t lose this.” .....read more 96-year-old Tom Neil is a famous Royal Air Force fighter pilot and ‘Ace’ of the Second World War who is benefitting from better sleep and more comfort thanks to a powered profiling and rotational bed.
Tom is a highly respected veteran of WW2 and completed 141 combat missions for the RAF during the Battle of Britain. He is the last surviving ‘Ace’ from this historic engagement and has published several books recalling his experiences flying Hurricanes and Spitfires between 1938-1964. Tom has multiple awards for bravery, held the position of Chairman of the Fighter Pilot’s Association and was a key figure in the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Britain. Now approaching the age of 97 Tom still retains his determined yet Gentlemanly persona - along with a desire to remain independent at home for as long as possible. Tom does not want full or part-time professional carers just yet and only has assistance from his sons a few days per week. Tom wants to remain as active as possible on his own terms so chooses to use assistive equipment. Getting in and out of bed without assistance was becoming more of a challenge as was achieving a comfortable position at night. Tom spent a few years discussing possible solutions with his late wife until he decided upon ownership of a electrically powered Rotoflex bed from Theraposture. This electrically operated rotational, height adjustable and profiling bed has future proofed Tom’s independence at home. The Rotoflex is available as either a bed for one person or part of a double combination that can be shared by couples. Every design is available in a variety of surrounds and conceals precision German-engineered mechanisms that provide smooth and quiet functionality. There is only one Rotoflex - an ergonomic rotating bed that includes a vertical seat lift for safe and controlled sit-to-stand transfers. Tom is able to benefit greatly from a sophisticated and accomplished proven solution that has been developed and continually improved for over 20 years. Tom has owned his Rotoflex bed for a few months and is delighted with the support it has provided. Tom explains: ‘I had considered an assistive bed for sometime but did not want a piece of apparatus that looked like a hospital bed. This is my 38th home after being stationed all round the world and I want it to remain the same. I saw the Rotoflex in an advert and was impressed with its abilities, it is my understanding that it is the best rotational bed on the market. Key to my decision was that it was practical, easily controllable and looked like a domestic bed.” Following a visit to his Suffolk home by one of Theraposture’s Trusted Assessors, the Rotoflex was deemed appropriate for Tom as it would provide increased comfort, support and safety. Tom chose a 4’6’’ wide Rotoflex for increased space to relax and a Damask upholstered surround. The bed is ideally suited to Tom’s decor and its castors ensure the Rotoflex can be moved easily for floor cleaning. Being able to sleep well has always been important to Tom ever since he began flying combat missions during WW2. It was essential he achieved as much rest as possible in between missions so he was alert, able to engage the enemy effectively and return to base unscathed. There was very little time between missions during the Battle of Britain as Tom’s squadron was permanently ready to scramble. Being able to get to sleep quickly was essential and now later in life Tom is able to do the same with his Rotoflex bed...read more Abacus Healthcare team help to raise over £2,000 for Young Epilepsy by completing British 10k7/14/2017 Bob Gibbs, Regional Sales Manager and Jon Nock Marketing Consultant for Abacus Healthcare have run the British 10k in London to raise funds for the Young Epilepsy charity.

TGA Mobility responds to Police call to help vulnerable and homeless Sudbury wheelchair user7/14/2017 TGA Mobility, the UK’s leading mobility scooter specialist with an Independent Living showroom in Sudbury, has donated a new wheelchair to help a well recognised vulnerable and disabled man who has been homeless locally for over twenty years.
TGA has a close relationship with the local constabulary as the Police support the many scooter safe driving days held at the company’s headquarters on Woodhall Business Park. Rachel Elding, Retail Development Manager, is responsible for the TGA mobility showroom which provides the largest range of quality scooters, wheelchairs, rise and recliner chairs, adjustable beds and independent living aids anywhere in East Anglia. She was recently approached by Police Community Support Officer, Jamie Fudge, regarding the possible donation of a wheelchair to assist a local vulnerable male who lives in Sudbury. As TGA is a regularly supporter of local charities and good causes Rachel was delighted to help. Commonly seen propelling himself backwards, this disabled and homeless individual had kept on the move until recently when his dilapidated wheelchair finally fell apart. This resulted in him becoming immobile and without funds to buy a replacement, the Police decided to put a call out for assistance. Read more.... |
